How to Guide

So how do you make a Nutrient Credit? We now run through a few ways of doing this with this helpful how to guide.

Nutrient credits are worth a lot of money, and in principal they should quite easy to make. But this is not the case. Nearly all routes to make a credit will require specialist knowledge. Most routes to generate a credits will require one or more of the following Nutrient Management, Drainage Design, Agronomy, Geology, Hydrology . . .  and above all a boat load of patience.

Please find below the various methods, by which phosphorus credits can be generated:

Septic Tank Upgrades

If you can locate a property on private drainage, that meets binding rules and wouldn't suitable for small scale thresholds. Then you can upgrade that septic tank to create around 1kg of Phosphate Credits &  7kg of Nitrogen Credits.

You will need to specify the systems before and after, and calculate the budget for each system, the difference between the before and after, this will give you an idea of how many credits you will make.

We generate a lot of our credits in this way. If you think you could be eligible for a septic tank upgrade and receive a cash payout, then please do get in touch.

Agricultural Source Removal

These scheme are typically large and can be centered around removal of stock or removal of buildings or paved areas which supply run-off to catchment.

Again the credit is proven via the before and after budget of the site. Typically this is calculated using specialist software, and requires a a good conversation with the land owner or farmer to hammer out all of the land uses, stock numbers, and the improvements that can be made to bring about the credits.

Combined Sewer Removal

Combined sewers are not a very good idea. During a heavy rainfall event, roof and surface water enter combined sewers. This then flows to local sewage treatment works, where they cause the sewage works to overflow. They also increase the volume of water that flows through the treatment plant, and therefore the amount of Phosphorous or Nitrogen.  By removing this inflow you can create a credit. Combined Sewer Removals.

Grey Water Recycling

You can install grey water recycling equipment to reduce the sewage outflow. As sewage is discharged from a sewage treatment works is treated to a set level (normally between 1 and 5 mg/l for P) then you will generate a credit.

Natural Capital Schemes

Woodland, Wetland, Nature Reserves all of these natural capital solutions can create nutrient credits.

Other Ideas

The world is you oyster. If you can think on a nutrient input in to a catchment then you can start to think about reducing or removing it and working out the credit yield. Some typical pit falls are:
